World No. 6 Alexander Zverev defeated American Tennis Sandgren 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 45 minutes to advance to the third round of Wimbledon on Thursday. However, 13th seed Gael Monfis lost to Spaniard Pedro Martinez in four sets.
Zverev, who lost in the second round of the Halle Open, scored 13 aces and made only two double faults. Tennis hit eight aces and made six double faults.
The 24-year-old German, who is yet to win a Grand Slam title, converted five of the 10 break points.
Martinez surprised 13th seed Frenchman Monfils with 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) to qualify for the third round. Although Monfils’ game was energetic, as he shot 21 aces against six from Martinez and also won more in the first service, he still failed.
Seventh seed Matteo Beretini scored a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Bottic Van de Zandshulp to qualify for the third round.
The Italian shot 20 aces against seven de Zandshulp. He also won 83 percent of points in the first serve.
Although he could only convert two of the seven break points, he was still better than the Dutch player, who failed to convert even one of his nine break points.
Chile’s 17th seed Christian Garin reached the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career after beating Australian Mark Polmans 7-6 (3), 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) in four sets.
