Dismissed from Barcelona a year ago, Luis Suarez showed that there is so much left in the Uruguayan superstar, as he scored the biggest goal of the season at Atletico Madrid, as the third largest Spanish club won the La Liga title for the first time in seven years.
The 34-year-old Suarez marked the winner of Atletico’s return victory over Real Valladolid, registering his name in the history book, as Atletico Madrid survived a dramatic final round to win the title after the score was 2-1.
The attacker also turned to social media to make clear his sense of what the title means to him.
The goal could not come at the right time for more reasons, as he beat Real Madrid for the title in a wild finish, which had many twists and turns, with the other two contenders for the title playing at the same time.
Madrid could not repeat itself as champions, although they came together to beat Villarreal 2-1 at home.
The results left Atletico two points ahead of Madrid at the end of the season of 38 rounds, which gave Diego Simeone’s team the second title in the league in 25 years. Atletico’s previous league title was in 1996, when Simeone was still playing for the club.
Atletico’s 11th league title ended the seven-year dominance of Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain. Since 2014, Barcelona has won the league four times and Madrid twice, including last season.
Real Madrid was trying to win league trophies for the first time since 2007-08. Barcelona had no competition, entering the final round.
