India’s Gili Dalabehera won the gold medal in the 45kg category in a severely depleted field with two athletes at the Asian Weightlifting Championships here on Sunday.
Jhilli, a bronze medalist at the World Junior Championships, lifted 69kg in the races and followed that with 88kg in a clean rhythm for a total of 157kg to finish at the top of the podium in all three categories at the gold level of the Olympic qualifying tournament, which was postponed due to the pandemic.
However, 45 kg is not an Olympic weight category.
The silver medal was won by Mary Flor Diaz from the Philippines for her efforts of 135 kg (60 kg + 75 kg).
With the victory, Gilly improved her silver medal in the last edition. However, this was a startling performance as she lifted 162 kg (71 kg + 91 kg) at the same event in 2019.
Her gold was India’s second medal of the tournament, as star weightlifter Mirabay Chanu broke the world record in the clean and drawn bronze medal category on Saturday.
Chanu lifted an Olympic 86kg worldwide and a world record of 119kg in clean and sharp for a total of 205kg, which was her personal best.
