US President Joe Biden chooses another major technology critic for key Justice Justice

Written by admin

US President Joe Biden nominated attorney and Google critic Jonathan Canter as head of the Justice Department’s antitrust ministry on Tuesday in the latest sign that the White House is determined to curb the world’s largest corporations, especially Big Tech.

Progressives who advocate for stricter enforcement of antitrust law have called for the nomination of Kanter, who recently set up his own law firm, the Kanter Law Group LLP, which claims to be an “antitrust law firm.”

The White House called Canter “Leading Advocate and Expert in Efforts to Promote Strong and Meaningful Antitrust and Competition Policy”.

He has spent years representing rivals to Alphabet’s Google, who The Ministry of Justice is suing last year, claiming he violated antitrust law in his quest to hunt rivals.

Earlier, the Biden administration selected two antitrust progressives with technical experience, Tim Wu, for the National Economic Council and Lina Khan to be Commissioner c Federal Trade Commission.

Sarah Miller, executive director of the American Economic Freedoms Project, said Kanter “has come up with many of the most successful legal arguments driving major antitrust investigations at Big Tech.”

Canter declined to comment on the nomination.

If confirmed by the Senate, Kanter, who previously worked for Paul, Weiss, Rifkind Wharton & Garrison LLP and two other major law firms, will take the reins of the Justice Department’s antitrust department amid calls for tighter enforcement such as in general, with special criticism from Google, Facebook,, Amazon, and Apple.

The technical giants have been under investigation for about two years, and in October the US House of Representatives issued a report saying they used “killer acquisitions” to repel competitors, impose excessive fees and force small business to “suppress” the name of profit.

The companies vigorously denied any violations.

The antitrust department of the Ministry of Justice at Kanter will play a key role in the implementation of Biden’s executive order, aimed at promoting competition in the US economy. In addition to suing Google, the Justice Department is investigating Apple.

The Federal Trade Commission shares the work of law enforcement agencies with the Ministry of Justice.
