Tiger Woods was seriously injured on Tuesday when his jeep crashed into the average, overturned and found itself on one side on a steep road in the Los Angeles suburb, known for its wreckage, authorities said. The golf superstar had to be removed through the windshield, and his agent told him he had undergone leg surgery.
Woods was alone in the jeep when he crashed into an elevated average just before 7:15 a.m., crossed two lanes and rolled over several times, authorities said at a news conference. No other cars are involved. The 45-year-old man was alert and able to communicate while firefighters opened the windshield to remove it.
The deployed airbags and the interior of the car remained largely intact, and this “gave him a pillow to survive the crash,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Both of his legs were seriously injured, said District Fire Chief Daryl Osby.
They said there was no immediate evidence that Woods was devalued. Authorities said they checked for the smell of alcohol or other signs that he was under the influence of a substance and did not find any. They did not say how fast he was driving.
The crash happened on a wide, descending section of two-lane road through the prestigious suburbs of Los Angeles. Deputy Sheriff Carlos Gonzalez, who was the first to arrive at the shipwreck, told reporters he sometimes caught people diverting 80 mph into the 45 mph zone and had seen fatal crashes there.
“I will say that I am very happy that Mr Woods has come out of this alive,” Gonzalez said.
Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend to host the Genesis Invitational tournament at the Riviera Country Club, where he unveiled the trophy on Sunday. He had to spend Monday and Tuesday in the photos with the property of Discovery GOLFTV, with whom he has approval. Tweet tweeted Woods on Monday in a stroller smiling with comedian David Spade.
According to Golf Digest, also owned by Discovery, the TV shots were courses for celebrities, such as Spade and Dwyane Wade, at Rolling Hills Country Club.
Woods, a 15-time main champion who shared with Sam Sneed the PGA Tour record of 82 career victories, is recovering from cross surgery on December 23. This was his fifth back operation and the first since the lower spine was fused in April 2017, which allowed him to organize a remarkable comeback, culminating in his fifth Masters title in 2019.
He has been involved in the sport since his record-breaking victory at the Masters in 1997, at the age of 21, winning at the most productive rate in the modern history of the PGA Tour. He is solely responsible for the rise in television ratings, which has led to a huge increase in cash prizes during his career. Even at 45, he remains the greatest draw in the sport.
The SUV, which was driving on Tuesday, had the logos of the tournaments on the side door, which shows that this is a friendly car for players from Genesis Invitational. Tournament director Mike Antolini did not immediately respond to a text message, although it is not uncommon for players to keep the friendly cars a few days after the event.
Woods feared he would never play again until the merger operation in 2017. He returned to win the tournament for the tournament to finish the 2018 season and won the Masters in April 2019 for the fifth time.
He last played on December 20 at the PNC Championship in Orlando, Florida, an unofficial event in which players are paired with parents or children. He played with his son Charlie, who is now 12. Woods also has a 13-year-old daughter.
During Sunday’s CBS broadcast of the golf tournament, Woods was asked about the Masters game on April 8-11 and said, “God, I hope so.” He said he felt a little stiff and had another test to see if is ready for more activities.
He wasn’t sure when he would play again.
Athletes from Mike Tyson to Magic Johnson and others have expressed hope that Woods will recover quickly.
“I’m sick to my stomach,” said Justin Thomas, the world’s number one golfer at the Working Days Championships in Bradenton, Florida. “It hurts to see one of my closest friends get into an accident. Man, I just hope it’s okay.
The crews used a crane to lift the damaged jeep from the hill brush. The vehicle was placed upright on the street and sheriff’s investigators inspected it and took pictures. He was then loaded onto an on-board truck and towed on Tuesday afternoon.
This is the third time Woods has been involved in a car investigation. The most sensational was the early morning after Thanksgiving in 2009, when his jeep ran over a fire hydrant and hit a tree. This was the beginning of shocking revelations that he had cheated on his wife with many women. Woods lost a large corporate sponsorship, went to a rehabilitation clinic in Mississippi and did not return to golf for five months.
In May 2017, Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of a car parked awkwardly on the side of the road. He was arrested on charges of DUI and later said he had an unexpected reaction to the prescription drug due to back pain. Woods later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and registered at a clinic to receive help with prescription drugs and sleep disorders.
Woods did not win the Zozo Championship in Japan in the fall of 2019 and he has reduced his playing schedule in recent years due to injuries. Tuesday’s operation will be his tenth. He has had four previous operations on his left knee, including a major reconstruction after winning the 2008 US Open, and five operations on his back.
