Starting with six athletes rushing from the European Championships to the Olympics, Spain tied 0-0 against Egypt on Thursday in the opening match of the men’s soccer tournament.
Spain’s best chance to score at Sapporo Dome came when Danny Chebalos hit the crossbar. The 24-year-old Real Madrid midfielder, who was injured at the end of the first half and had to be sent off, is one of the three overweight players allowed in the squad.
The players in the starting lineup, who were also part of Spain’s run to the semi-finals of Euro 2020 two weeks ago, were goalkeeper Unai Simon, defenders Eric Garcia and Po Torres, midfielder Pedro and strikers Danny Olmo and Mikel Ojarzabal.
Egypt has selected players from local clubs, with the exception of Saudi-based Aramed Ahmed Hegazi, the team’s captain. Liverpool will not release striker Mohamed Salah for the Olympics with the Premier League season starting in three weeks.
