World Cup defender Shkodran Mustafi is among 10 players who will leave Bundesliga club Schalke in a clean zone at the end of the season.
Schalke said on Thursday that Mustafi is one of four players with expiring contracts that will not be renewed. The German defender was signed by Arsenal in January with a short-term contract after failing to get time to play in the Premier League. He was the deputy central defender Ozan Kabak, who was leased to Liverpool.
The other Schalke players with expiring contracts are former Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb and winger Alessandro Schopf and Steven Skrzibski. The relegation has activated clauses allowing defender Bastian Ocipka and former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Benjamin Istanbul to leave. Schalke said four more players will leave when their loan deals are completed.
However, Arsenal-owned defender Sead Kolasinac is not on the list of leaving players. He is captain in the second half of Schalke’s season and German media report that the club hopes to keep him for next season in the second division.
