Star players Andre Russell, Chris Gale, and Shimron Hetmeier were on Tuesday nominated in the 18-time interim team for the West Indies for the home series T20 International against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan.
Russell and Hetmeier last played in 2020, while Gale was part of the series against Sri Lanka in March.
The expanded team maintains a combination of experienced players with exciting young talent, while the West Indies continues preparations to build the defense of its ICC T20 World Cup title, which will take place in India in October-November.
Sheldon Cottrell, Hetmeier, Russell, Auchan Thomas and Hayden Walsh Jr. are back with most of the team that took part in the 2-1 T20I victory over Sri Lanka. Kieron Pollard will lead the country.
The interim team will quarantine and train in Saint Lucia before the first T20I series against South Africa, which starts on June 26 at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada. Subsequently, the official lineup will be selected and announced before each Series.
The leading coach of CWI, Roger Harper, explained the thinking behind the naming of this team.
“The T20I interim team has been made up of all the T20I home series matches against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan. This gives us the opportunity to continue to build on the upcoming World Cup and determine our best team and our ideal eleven.”
The West Indies are the defending champions of the T20 World Cup and also lifted the title in 2012.
“CWI works closely with regional governments, their ministries of health and CARPHA to ensure that training camps and matches can continue in a biologically protected environment. All players and support staff will be rigorously tested for COVID-19 before and after time of each of these commitments, “the statement said.
