Serena Williams won her first victory in more than three months, defeating 17-year-old qualifier Lisa Pigato 6-3, 6-2 on Monday in the first round of the Emilia-Romagna Open.
Williams, who accepted a wild card invitation to the tournament in Parma after losing her opening match at the Italian Open last week, dominates after releasing her serve in the opening match.
Williams did not win after defeating Simona Halep in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in February. She was eliminated by Naomi Osaka’s first Grand Slam tournament of the year in the semifinals.
After a break, Williams lost in sets in Rome to Nadia Podorosca, a semifinalist at last year’s French Open.
Williams is preparing for Roland Garros, which starts in two weeks.
It was the WTA’s first match for Pigato and the 1001st for Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion.
Williams will then face 68th Katerina Sinyakova, who eliminated Danish teenager Clara Towson 6-1, 6-3.
