Star tennis players Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina will represent India in the women’s doubles category at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics on July 23. Sania, 34, will be the first athlete to represent India at four Olympics when she competes in Tokyo 2020.
Union Minister of Youth and Sports Kiren Ridge on Friday he went on Twitter to greet the couple before the games. “Congratulations to @mirzasania and @ankita_champ, who will represent India in women’s doubles tennis at # Tokyo2020 after the official announcement of participation. This will be Sania’s fourth Olympics, while this will be Raina’s debut. All the best to them.” he wrote.
“Ankita is a hard-working, sincere girl. “She spent some time with me just before the Billy Jean King Cup,” Sanya told Olympics.com recently.
“I first met her when she was about 14 or 15 years old. And she is very disciplined, which is her greatest strength. I have never been to the Olympics with a colleague from an Indian player who is in the top 100 in the world. It’s really good to play with someone who is on tour regularly. She has a long way to go. But at least she’s there, playing every week and somehow understanding her level. “
Sania teamed up with Sunita Rao in Beijing 2008, Rushmi Chakravarti in London 2012 and Prtana Tombare in Rio 2016. This will be the first time she has a partner who is also ranked in the top 100.
Sania and Ankita, who are currently trading at Wimbledon 2021, will face off in the first round of mixed doubles on Friday. While Sania mates with Rohan Bopana, Ankita reunites with Ramkumar Ramanathan.
Earlier, Sania and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands launched their last campaign at Wimbledon, stunning the sixth pair, Alexa Guarachi from Chile and Desirae Krawczyk from the United States. The duo advanced to the second round with a comprehensive 7-5, 6-3 victory.
