Former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has been charged with assaulting two women, prosecutors said on Friday.
Giggs, 47, who currently coaches the Welsh national team, was ordered to appear in court on Wednesday. He was under investigation since his arrest last year.
The Crown Prosecution Service said it had authorized police in Greater Manchester to accuse Giggs of “conduct that is controlling or coercive and assault causing actual bodily harm.”
“An accusation of assault by beating a second woman has also been allowed,” the service said.
The decision to charge Giggs was made after reviewing the evidence gathered by Manchester police, prosecutors said.
Giggs was arrested in November and released on bail.
