Indian Ramkumar Ramanathan bowed to the Singapore Open after nearly three consecutive defeats by American Tarot Daniel in the opening round, here on Monday.
Ramkumar, ranked 200, lost 3-6 7-6 (3) 3-6 in two hours and six minutes to the American, who is ranked 80th above him.
Ramkumar had two chances to break his opponent’s pass in the match, but could not convert either.
It was the second defeat for Ramcoumar against Daniel in so many matches after losing to the American in 2012 in an ITF Futures event.
Ramkumar will also take part in the doubles competition with compatriot Purav Raja. They face the Korean-Japanese combo from S Kwon and Y Uchiyama.
Rohan Bopanna, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and N Sriram Balaji also compete in the $ 300,000 doubles tournament.
All eyes will be on Yuki Bambri, who is returning to competitive tennis after a difference of more than two years.
Playing with his protected ranking (PR), Yuki faces Australian wild card Matthew Ebden, who finished second in the mixed doubles competition at the Australian Open with Samantha Stosur.
If he manages to pass the first obstacle, he will face the number 39 in the world John Millman, also from Australia.
