Olympic boxer Sakti Mazumdar dies of a heart attack

Former Indian boxer Sakti Mazumdar, who represented India at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, died Friday after suffering a heart attack. He was 89 years old.

“It is with deep sorrow that we regret to inform you that Mr Shakti Mazumdar has died today in Baligunj, West Bengal,” said Asit Banerjee, President of the Bengal Amateur Boxing Federation (BABF).

Mazumdar suffered from age-related problems and suffered a heart attack on Friday morning.

He won the first round of the men’s lightweight competition at the 1952 Olympics after receiving a transfer from Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Qua and being defeated by South Korea’s Han Su-en in the next round.
