India’s Nikhat Zarin stunned current world champion Paltseva Ekaterina to enter the women’s 51kg quarterfinals at the Bosphorus Bosphorus tournament in Istanbul.
The bronze medalist from the Asian Championship, Zarin, caused a great upset on the second day of the tournament on Wednesday, when he beat the Russian boxer 5-0.
The Indian Pagilist will have another tough match ahead as he faces two-time world champion Kyzaibay Nazym of Kazakhstan in his last eight rounds.
In addition to Zareen, 2013 Asian champions Shiva Thapa, Sonia Lather and Parveen also registered victories in their respective categories to advance to the quarterfinals.
Tapa won better than Kazakhstan’s Smagulov Bagtiyov with 3: 2 in the men’s 63kg division.
World silver medalists Lather (57 kg) and Parveen (60 kg) defeated local favorites Surmeneli Tugcenaz and Ozyol Esra 5-0 in their respective women’s second round matches.
However, these were curtains for Duryodhah Negi (69 kg), Brijesh Yadav (81 kg) and Krishan Sharma (+ 91 kg), as they lost their preliminary rounds.
The third day of the event will witness six Indian boxers fighting in their respective quarterfinal fights.
