Paris Saint-Germain have signed midfielder Jorgeninho Vinaldum on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool. The 30-year-old Dutch international has joined a three-year deal until 2024, PSG said in a statement on Thursday.
He played 237 games in five seasons for Liverpool, helping the English side win the Champions League and Premier League. He chose not to renew his contract and was initially expected to join Barcelona. But PSG reportedly came in with a better salary offer.
Wijnaldum is a multifunctional midfielder and he also doubled as an emergency center in the middle during Liverpool’s injury-stricken campaign this season.
“I am joining one of the best teams in Europe,” said Vinaldum after signing his contract. “Paris Saint-Germain has proved how good they have been in recent years and I am convinced that together with our supporters we can go even further and higher. “
PSG is looking to strengthen its team after failing to win the French title, as Lille has brought one of the biggest upsets of European football in recent seasons. PSG was also knocked out in the semifinals of the Champions League by Manchester City.
The club recently persuaded Neymar to sign a new long-term contract, but the prolific striker Kailian Mbape is hesitant for a new deal and his contract expires at the end of next season.
The star, who won the French World Cup, called on the club to show an ambitious project to keep it.
In recent days, PSG has been linked with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donarmama, who according to many observers is the best in the world. He chose to leave Milan and is also linked with Juventus.
