Mi Mix Fold debuted as Xiaomi’s first foldable phone. The new phone competes directly with similar Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Huawei Mate X2. The new smartphone is part of the Mi Mix series, which brought concept devices such as the original Mi MIX and Mi Mix Alpha in the past. However, unlike those concepts that were aimed at demonstrating the company’s innovative efforts, the Mi Mix Fold is designed as a commercial device that will be available for purchase and carries a conventional folding design. Mi Mix Fold is also Xiaomi’s first phone to have its own Surge C1 signal processor (ISP) and Liquid Lens technology.
Mi Mix Fold price, availability details
Mi Mix Fold the price is set at 9,999 CNY (approximately Rs 1.12 100) for the base version 12GB + 256GB storage. Pricing reaches 10,999 CNY (approximately Rs 1.23,300) for the 12 GB + 512 GB storage configuration and 12,999 CNY (approximately Rs 1.45,700) for the best 16 GB + 512 GB storage option. Mi Mix Fold will be available for purchase from April 16 in mainland China through Xiaomi’s official sales channels. However, pre-orders for Mi Mix Fold – along with Mi Mix Fold Ceramic Special Edition – start in the country on March 30.
Details on the global availability and pricing of Mi Mix Fold are yet to be announced.
Mi Mix Fold specifications
As early as January 2019, Xiaomi President Lynn Bin confirmed that the company is working on a “dual-fold smartphone”. Mi Mix Fold is the result of early prototypes that Xiaomi showed then. The company claims that Mi Mix Fold has undergone 200,000 bends in reliability testing and up to one million bends in extreme reliability tests.
Xiaomi has used a U-shaped hinge design of Mi Mix Fold, which carries folding inwards – similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Huawei Mate X2. It has an 8.01-inch WQHD + flexible OLED display with 900 nits of peak brightness and a 4: 3 aspect ratio. On the cover side, the phone offers a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 840×2,520 pixels, a 27: 9 aspect ratio and a maximum brightness of 700 nits. The internal screen of Mi Mix Fold has a traditional refresh rate of 60Hz, while the external display carries a refresh rate of 90Hz.
The flexible Mi Mix Fold display also includes support for Dolby Vision and HDR10 + standards. It also has a DCI-P3 color gamut and 4,300,000: 1 color contrast ratio. The external display also includes HDR10 + support and is capable of doubling the resolution of photos and videos up to 1440p.
Under the lid Mi Mix Fold has an octa-core core Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, along with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The smartphone also includes a butterfly type cooling system, which has VC liquid cooling, thermogel and multilayer graphite sheets, among other heat dissipation methods.
Mi Mix Fold offers the Surge C1 ISP, which is said to be under development in the last few years. The patented processor can offer high performance without consuming many resources. It is also advertised to bring an improved 3A algorithm and low light focusing capabilities to provide more accurate autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance over the competition. Xiaomi claims to have spent 140 million CNY (approximately Rs. 157 crore) during the research and development stages of the Surge C1 chip.
In addition to the Surge C1, Mi Mix Fold has Liquid Lens technology, which uses the principle of bionics of the human eye and forms a lenticular structure with a transparent liquid wrapped in a film. There is also a high-precision motor to change the radius of curvature of the spherical surface to offer up to 3x optical zoom, up to 30x telephoto and a minimum focal length of three centimeters.
“One lens practically covers the functions of two lenses. You can capture micro-details up close and watch magnificent rivers and mountains from a distance, ”the company said in a blog post while defining his Liquid Lens technology.
The Mi Mix Fold also has a triple rear camera setting that includes a 108-megapixel primary sensor Samsung HM2, an 8-megapixel secondary sensor with Liquid Lens technology and a 13-megapixel sensor with an f / 2.4 ultra-wide angle lens. There is also a 20-megapixel selfie camera sensor on the front.
Xiaomi has provided a 5020 mAh dual-cell battery to the Mi Mix Fold, which supports 67W fast charging. It is estimated that the phone is fully charged in 37 minutes. Mi Mix Fold also includes quad-core speakers, which are tuned by Harman Kardon and are powered by Xiaomi’s own four-speaker algorithm. This is said to carry 3D spatial reproduction of the audio field.
Mi Mix Fold comes with Corning Gorilla Glass protection on the back with a ceramic texture. There is also Mi Mix Fold Ceramic Special Edition, which has identical hardware to the standard model, but with a gold middle frame and volume buttons, as well as a black ceramic back with special laser engraving.
The front of the Mi Mix Fold software works Android 10 s MIUI 12. The phone also includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Connection options include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth and USB Type-C port.
Mi Mix Fold measures 173.27×133.38×7.62 mm when unfolded or 173.27×69.8×17.2 mm when unfolded. The standard edition of Mi Mix Fold weighs 317 grams, while the Ceramic Special Edition weighs 332 grams.
