Olympic boxers Manish Kaushik and Satish Kumar will miss the Asian Boxing Championships, which begin on May 21 in Dubai, as they have not fully recovered from Covid-19.
“The good news for us is that Kaushik’s latest report on Covid-19 is negative. But since he has not started normal training, it has been decided that he will miss the Asian meeting,” a national camp coach told IANS from Patiala. .
While Kaushik qualifies for the men’s 63kg Olympics, Kumar will compete in the men’s 91kg category.
Both boxers attended the national camp at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.
The 25-year-old Kaushik started the 2021 season with an impressive victory in an invited boxing tournament in Spain in March.
According to the coach of the national team, Kaushik will resume training with moderate intensity this week.
“We will start from 30 to 40 percent and gradually increase the workload. We are not in a hurry, as the main focus is to perform well at the Tokyo Olympics,” the coach added.
Kumar, 32, has already started training, but will still train with 100 percent intensity. “He is not fit to compete, so it was decided to give him a break,” the coach added.
The members of the Indian team will leave for Dubai on May 22, as their matches start on May 24.
