Manica Batra’s performance at the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament came to an end after she lost 1-4 to Monaco’s Xiaoxin Yang in the women’s semifinals of the women’s eliminations here on Monday.
Despite losing the first two games, world number 63 Batra kept his nerves and tried to come back by winning the third game. However, her higher ranked rival Yang, world number 44, did not allow momentum to slip away and complete the draw 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9.
In the quarterfinals, played late Sunday, Batra defeated Rimma Gufranova of Uzbekistan 12-10, 11-3, 11-6, 11-4. The other Indian in the fight, Sutirta Mukherjee, lost to Russia’s Polina Mihaylova 12-10, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 10-12, 5-11 in an exciting match.
Sharat Kamal and Gnanasekaran Satian had come out after suffering losses in the second round of the men’s singles on Sunday.
The Indian rowers will now focus on the Asian Olympic qualifiers, scheduled for March 18-20 in Doha.
Sharat and Satian will play in the men’s single, while Batra and Mukherjee will play in the women’s single. In the mixed doubles category, Sharat and Batra will look to seal the Olympic pier.
