Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Monday eliminated three players, including a batsman Kusal Mendis and wiki goalkeeper Niroshan Dikuela for breaking the bio-bubble during their ongoing tour of England and ordered their immediate return to the country.
The two, along with discoverer Danushka Gunatilaka, were spotted roaming the streets of Durham after the final T20 international on Sunday night, which Sri Lanka lost with a massive 89 runs.
All three players were part of player XI in the game.
“Sri Lanka’s Cricket Executive Committee has stopped Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunatilaka and Niroshan Dikuela for violating the bio-bubbles and they will be recalled to Sri Lanka immediately,” SLC Secretary Mohan De Silva said in a statement.
Reacting to the video posted by a Sri Lankan fan, SLC chief Shami Silva said that “an investigation is underway because they have violated (the code of conduct)”.
Sri Lanka dropped 0-3 in the T20 series, which ended on Sunday. This was the island’s fifth consecutive loss in the international T20 since October 2020.
The defeat led to former greats such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Roshan Mahanama, Hashan Thilakaratne and Tillekaratne Dilshan, who expressed horror at the poor performance.
Sri Lanka will play the first of three ODIs with England tomorrow at Chester Le Street.
