ISL 2020-21: Mumbai City fails in the Shield League while Jamshedpur claims a stunning victory

JFC seem to have done their homework right, as it was difficult for the islanders to play in the back, as they usually do.

Mumbai City FC lost 0-2 to Jamshedpur FC, making it difficult for them to secure the top spot in the Hero Indian Super League table here on Saturday.

Goals from substitutes Boris Singh (72 ‘) and David Grande (90’) helped JFC inflict a second straight defeat on the islanders, who are experiencing their worst phase in the league so far.

This result meant that a win for ATK Mohun Bagan against Hyderabad FC on Monday would provide them with a shield for the league winners and first place in the AFC Champions League.

These were pretty ordinary first 45 minutes with very little action all the time. Jamshedpur was the dominant country, weakening Mumbai’s usual free-kicking football. Owen Coyle’s men played a game of high pressure, thus disrupting Mumbai City’s moves.

JFC seem to have done their homework right, as it was difficult for the islanders to play in the back, as they usually do. They only had one shot in the first session, which was also off target.

Although both sides did not have a clear chance, Mumbai’s Amrinder Singh was relatively busier than JFC’s TP Rehenesh. Amrinder was called into action in the 5th minute, when Isaac Vanmalsauma intercepted a cross from the left flank in the field for Nerius Valskis. But its title was met by Amrinder’s palm.

JFC kept knocking on Mumbai’s door the whole time, but didn’t get the finishing touches. Seiminlen Doungel and Farukh Choudhary had their chances, but again failed to keep their experience in the goal.

Valskis missed a chance to bring his country forward when played by Isaac. However, the Lithuanian went.

In the second session, nothing changed as the JFC continued its attack on Mumbai’s goal. Isaac sent a cross to Choudhary, who showed great technique in controlling the ball before passing his marker, only to see his experience saved by Amrinder.

There was no surprise when JFC put the ball in the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Aitor Monroy hit a low delivery on a nearby post and Choudhary overtook Ahmed Jahu and moved him to the middle. Boris was in the right place at the right time to kick the ball into the back of the net.

Mumbai had a chance to restore parity from a corner. Cy Goddard managed to find Murtada Fall with his delivery from the latter, but shot wide with his head.

Grande provided full points for JFC with a fine finish. Isaac and Monroe combined in the middle of the park with a little pressure before the Spaniard passed the ball on the road to Grande, who stabbed it past Amrinder.
