Piyush Chaula’s skill set will not only help the Mumbai Indians under pressure this year IPL but his vast experience will also be useful in mentoring the team’s young spinners, the defending champions said on Thursday.
The Mumbai Indians strengthened their spin division by adding 32-year-old Chaula to the team at the last auction.
“I’ve been playing with Pius since U-19 days. And I know he’s a very attacking bowler, which is something we wanted in our spin bowling department,” said Rohit, who made MI record five titles. video posted on the official Twitter sidebar.
“He was a good buy to get him on our team, one of the top players in the IPL. He plays a lot of games in the IPL. He knows the form, he knows the oppositions, he knows the players,” Rohit added.
Chaula, 32, said it was great to be picked up by the owners.
“I’m quite happy and excited because you want to be part of a team that is a defensive champion and has performed so well in the IPL, so it’s really nice,” Chaula said.
Mumbai Indians, director of cricket operations and former Indian player Zaheer Khan said Chaula’s experience would also help young Rahul Chahar.
“We appreciate his experience very much. We also have Rahul Chahar in the team, who is an upcoming young talent. Piyush Chaula’s experience will certainly help him,” Zahir said.
“Pius Chaula will not only bring his game or skills to the team, but also his rich experience. He has been in situations of pressure (s) he has a bigger role.
“He will be the senior spinner on the team and with my experience I am sure he will be able to mentor all those spinners they have on the team and sharing that experience has always worked,” Zahir added.
Chaula also said it was important to have an understanding with other spinners on the team.
“I have seen Rahul (Chahar) and played cricket with Jayant (Yadav) and Krunal (Pandia), so it is very important that we share our experience, because there may be things that Krunal knows and I do not. The things you know Rahul doesn’t know. So it’s important to develop understanding and you can move it forward, “Chaula said.
The Mumbai Indians will face the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 14 lung hole here on Friday.
