Star India batsman Rishabh Pant was appointed captain of the Delhi Capitals on Tuesday to replace the injured Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, starting on April 9. Iyer was expelled from IPL after injuring his left shoulder during the recently concluded ODI series from India and England.
This will be the 23-year-old Pant’s debut as captain of the IPL. Wicketkeeper-batsman has been captain of the Delhi national team in the past.
“Delhi is where I grew up and where my IPL journey began six years ago. Leading this team one day is a dream I’ve always kept. And today, when that dream comes true, I feel humble,” Pant said. “I am really grateful,
especially to the owners of our team, who thought I was capable enough for the role. With an amazing coaching staff and plenty of seniors around me, I can’t wait to do my best for Delhi Capitals. “
Pant was one of the architects of India’s historic 2-1 series victory in Australia in January. He then played a big role in India’s 3-1 victory in the series against England, scoring 270 runs of six innings with the help of a century.
Pant also returned to the Indian white team against England. After a decent outing at T20 Internationals, he was in cracking form in the ODI series, hitting 77 and 78 in both games.
Ayer described Pant as the best player to run Delhi’s country.
“When I suffered a shoulder injury and Delhi Capitals needed a leader for this edition of the IPL, I had no doubt that Rishab would be the best person for the job,” he said.
“He has all my good wishes to do amazing things with our absolutely amazing team. I will miss him immensely and I will be happy for them all the time.”
Head coach Ricky Ponting said Pant’s success in the series against Australia and England would give him the confidence he needed to take on the new role.
“This is an incredible opportunity for the young Rishab, who is successfully leaving Australia and England, which will undoubtedly give him the confidence he needs to take on a new role that comes with much more responsibility,” said the former Australian captain.
“The coaching staff is excited to work with him and we can’t wait for the season to start.”
Co-owner Parth Jindal said Pant embodies DC’s passionate and fearless cricket brand.
“There is no doubt that Shrias Ayer’s leadership and wadding will be missed this year and we hope to see him on the pitch again soon,” Jindal said.
“Delhi Capitals as a team plays a passionate and fearless brand of cricket, and Rishabh Pant embodies this best. The Delhi team has played an important role in his growth as a cricket player, just as he has played an equally important role in the growth of the cricket team. Delhi. “
Delhi Capitals will face Chennai Super Kings in their first match of the IPL 2021 season at Wanhead Stadium on April 10.
Delhi Capitals finished second in the last edition of the IPL, losing to the Mumbai Indians in the final.
