Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was eliminated in the first round by American Sloane Stevens, 6-3, 6-4.
Stevens, a former top 10 player who now ranks 73rd, made just 14 unforced errors. Her best performance at Wimbledon was in 2013, when she reached the quarterfinals.
Kvitova was placed 10th and won the tournament in 2011 and 2014.
Among the other winners were 2017 champion Garbinie Mugurusa, Arina Sabalenka – who was ranked No. 2 after defending champion Simona Halep, and four-time Naomi Osaka champion – Madison Keys’ 23rd and Ekaterina Alexandrova’s 32nd.
The tournament referee began announcing a delay of about 15 hours, including matches involving five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams and French Open semifinalist Maria Sakari.
And yet, at least there, tennis is played at the site of the oldest Grand Slam tournament.
