Legendary Adam Gilchrist said that Cricket Australia (California) did not conduct a thorough investigation of the Sandpaper Gate for 2018, refusing to go deeper into the problem of manipulating the balls.
The former extreme goalkeeper-whip said that during the whole episode CA missed the opportunity to make a strong statement.
“There was a possibility for CA if they made such a strong statement that they had to do a more in-depth investigation to find out where the root of the problem is,” Gilchrist was quoted as saying by SEN Radio.
“Everyone would be naive to think that people don’t know what’s going on with ball maintenance. I don’t think Cricket Australia wanted to go there. They didn’t want to go deeper than this superficial example of ball tampering. . “
The ball-fixing fiasco in South Africa led to a review of Australia’s team culture at all costs except the one-year ban by the then captain Steve Smith, his deputy David Warner and the nine-month removal of Cameron Bancroft.
Bancroft’s recent statement on the scandalous episode again raised the question of forging the balls in the spotlight.
During an interview, Bancroft hinted that bowling may have known about the plot that led him and two others – Smith and Warner – to pay a huge price.
Gilchrist, 49, has known that the handling of balls in world cricket has been going on for a long time, but California has never bothered to delve deeply into the problem.
“They didn’t investigate whether it was systematic if it happened and went on and on. Around the cricket globe, it was widely accepted that many teams did.
“You have not seen any reversal since this incident as a general statement about world cricket. Very minimal reversal.
“The positive thing that came with this penalty is that it seems to have been eradicated from the game because it is out of control of the whole cricket world, not just the Australian cricket team,” Gilchrist said.
“They (California) didn’t want to go deeper than that superficial example of forging balls.”
CA said it was open to re-investigate the incident following Bancroft’s recent remarks.
