Players from the Chilean team in the Copa America violated the coronavirus protocols of the tournament after a “barber” visited the hotel of the players in the Brazilian city of Cuiaba.
The Chilean Football Federation issued a statement Sunday saying it “recognizes the violation of the health bubble of the Copa America team by the unauthorized entry of a barber who, despite a negative PCR test, was not allowed to contact the players. “
The Chilean federation did not specify the number or names of players involved, but said it would be fined.
“We regret what led us to this situation and inform that all members of the team tested negative for the virus on Saturday,” the federation said.
Chile coach Martin Lasarte told a news conference that his players had made a “serious mistake”.
“It was a mistake, restraint, but it’s over,” said Lasarte, adding that all players remain eligible to play in Chile’s next match against Uruguay. He did not say when the barber visited the hotel of the Chilean team.
Chile and Argentina share the lead in Group A with four points after two matches. The Chileans can secure a place in the knockout stages of the tournament with a victory on Monday against Uruguay.
