Christoph Baumgartner knocked out Austria for the first time in the European Championship, scoring the only goal in his team’s 1-0 victory over Ukraine on Monday.
Baumgartner knocked into a corner by Austrian captain David Alaba in the 21st minute, just four minutes after colliding head-on with Ilia Zabarni at the other end of the field.
Baumgartner was then substituted in the 32nd minute, holding his head as he left the field.
Austria finished second in Group C with six points and the next meeting with Italy in London on Saturday. Ukraine is third with three points and can still qualify for the round of 16 as one of the top four teams in third place.
Alaba played in the middle of the back three in the previous matches, but on Monday he was on the left in a defensive line of four people, supporting the attack with well-executed crossings and corner kicks from both sides.
