Arsenal have withdrawn from the Florida Cup and canceled their pre-season trip to the United States after members of his traveling group tested positive for COVID-19, the club said.
The Premier League team had to leave for Thursday and play against Inter Milan in Orlando on Sunday. It says that “a small number” of traveling countries are positive.
“We fully understand what a disappointment this is for our supporters in America, who were looking forward to seeing us compete in the Florida Cup as part of our pre-season accumulation,” the team said in a statement.
“We also apologize to the organizers of the Florida Cup, who have done a fantastic job in preparation, and to our partners, who have arranged events around our participation in the competition.”
The statement did not specify how many members of the travel group gave positive results or whether there were players.
“We are pleased to say that currently staff members are not showing symptoms of COVID. Now they are in self-isolation at home, “said the team. “We hope everyone understands this difficult situation, which is beyond anyone’s control.”
Milonarios of Everton and Columbia are the other teams competing in the seventh edition of the Florida Cup.
“We are disappointed that Arsenal have decided not to play in the Florida Cup in 2021,” the tournament said in a statement. “We wish the members of Arsenal’s traveling party, who have proved positive for COVID-19, a speedy recovery as we continue to make final preparations for the event.”
Tournament organizers have not announced whether Arsenal will be replaced by another team.
Arsenal added that it “makes alternative arrangements in accordance with Premier League protocols to continue our preparations for the new season.”
