Apple released its first iPhone with 5G wireless speeds a few months ago. He is now looking to start working on sixth generation or 6G cellular connectivity, which shows that he wants to be a leader in technology instead of relying on other companies.
The Cupertino, California-based company this week posted job vacancies looking for engineers to explore wireless systems for current and next-generation networks. The listings are for positions in On Apple offices in Silicon Valley and San Diego, where the company is working on developing wireless technology and chip design.
“You will have the unique and rewarding opportunity to create next-generation wireless technology that will have a profound impact on future Apple products,” the job post said. “In this role, you will be at the center of an avant-garde research group responsible for creating disruptive next-generation radio access technologies over the next decade.”
People hired for these positions will “research and design next-generation (6G) wireless communication systems for radio access networks” and “participate in industry / academic forums passionate about 6G technology.” Observers in the industry do not expect the release of 6G until around 2030, but job postings show that Apple wants to participate in the earliest stages of development of the new technology. A company spokesman declined to comment.
The current part of Apple from iPhone models use 5G modems designed by Qualcomm. While the company launched its first 5G devices at the right time, several phone makers outperformed it, and Apple relied heavily on Qualcomm to connect to the new wireless network, which dramatically improves the amount and speed of data users can download. To bring 5G to the latest iPhones, Apple has filed a lawsuit with the San Diego-based chip maker. Apple’s early involvement in 6G research and design shows that it will not wait for the next big improvement.
Late last year, Apple joined an alliance of companies working on standards for 6G and other next-generation cellular technologies. Standards and timing for 6G are still poorly defined, but some analysts say the technology can allow speeds over 100 times faster than 5G.
Job ads are another signal of Apple’s constant pressure to develop more technology internally. The company has designed the main processors for the iPhone and iPad and last year extended that effort to Mac. It has also expanded its work on its own screens and camera technologies, in addition to wireless chips for AirPods,, Apple Watch, and accurate location data.
Last year, Apple began developing its first consumer modem, the chip that allows phones to connect to wireless networks. During a town hall meeting with employees in December, Johnny Suruji, Apple’s consumer technology and chip manager, said that “long-term strategic investments like these are a critical part of enabling our products and ensuring we have a wide range from innovative technologies for our future. “
Although Apple is laying the groundwork to be a key player in 6G, there is a lot of work ahead to take full advantage of 5G, a technology in its infancy. The company has not expanded 5G to other devices such as the Apple Watch and iPad, and sells many iPhone models that use older 4G technology. Probably Apple’s first modem will be for 5G connectivity.
