Anu Rani improved his own national javelin record, but still missed the Tokyo Olympics qualifier by more than half a meter on the day of the opening of the National Athletics Championships for the Federation Cup here on Monday.
Rani won the gold with the best throw of 63.24m, which came out in his third attempt, erasing his earlier national score of 62.43m, which he had recorded during the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
The qualifying score for the women’s Olympic javelin throw in Tokyo is 64 meters.
The 28-year-old, who won bronze at the 2014 Asian Games and silver at the 2019 Asian Championships, represented Uttar Pradesh at the national event.
Sanjana Choudari of Rajasthan was a distant second with the best throw of 54.55m, while Kumari Sharmila of Haryana was third with the best effort of 50.78m in the field of eight athletes.
