AMD made a number of important product announcements at the Computex 2021 virtual show. premium gaming features, the AMD Advantage label for laptops, promising optimized design and performance, and the long-awaited Fidelity FX Super Resolution graphics scaling technology, which is widely compatible with graphics processors from all manufacturers.
Starting with the new desktop APUs, the Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G will fill market gaps between existing Ryzen 5000 series processors, and should also help alleviate the problems caused by the current shortage of discrete graphics cards, which has led to huge price spikes. Codenamed “Cezanne”, the two new processor models will be available worldwide from August 5.
The Ryzen 7 5700G is priced at $ 359 (approximately Rs. 26,815 before taxes) and has 8 multithreaded processor cores running at up to 4.6 GHz, as well as 8 GPU units. The Ryzen 5 5600G, on the other hand, is priced at $ 259 (approximately Rs 19,345) and has six multithreaded cores plus 7 GPUs. Both have 65W TDP power and will be sold with coolers included. They will work with all motherboards that support current Ryzen 5000 series processors. AMD promises that integrated GPUs in their new desktop processors will be able to play 1080p as well as handle content creation loads.
AMD also announced six Cezanne-based ones Ryzen Pro Business processors; three with a 65 W TDP and three with a 35 W TDP designed for small form factor desktops, citing a strong demand for compact commercial desktops with security and management features.
The new series of mobile graphics processors Radeon RX 6000M is based on RDNA2 architecture which supports DirectX beam tracking and smart memory access (AMD’s implementation of a variable BAR) They also promise a significant performance improvement of 1.5 times or up to 43 percent better energy efficiency than the previous generation. The flagship Radeon RX 6800M is believed to deliver over 120fps in today’s popular games while running at 1440p at high settings, including Battlefield V, F1 2020, Overwatch and Apex Legends. Going down the stack are the new Radeon RX 6700M and Radeon RX 6600M, which promise over 100fps at 1440p and 1080p respectively.
Radeon RX 6800M has 40 units of account and beam accelerators. It will have 12GB of GDDR6 RAM on a 192-bit interface plus 96MB of Infinity cache. According to AMD, it will be competitive with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 in laptops. The Radeon RX 6700M has 36 CU and beam accelerators, with 10GB of GDDR6 on a 160-bit bus and 80MB of cache. The Radeon RX 6600M goes down to 28 CU and beam accelerators, with 8GB of GDDR6 on a 128-bit bus and 32MB of cache.
The TDP ratings for the three GPUs are 145W, 135W and 100W, respectively, but they can be changed by laptop manufacturers depending on the chassis design and cooling. In addition, the new Radeon RX 6000M series GPUs support AMD SmartShift power balancing technology when used with Ryzen mobile processor. AMD also says that buyers can expect improved performance from thin and light laptops with limited power, as well as when running on battery. Laptops incorporating these new GPUs will be announced by OEMs from June 2021.
To promote gaming laptops based on Ryzen and Radeon GPUs, as well as their supporting software, AMD has introduced a new design framework for AMD Advantage. The new initiative will see the company work closely with laptop manufacturers to help optimize performance as well as fine-tune parameters such as operating temperatures, display quality, acoustics, connectivity, battery power, size and weight. The first laptops developed under this initiative will be launched in June 2021, starting with the new Asus ROG Strix G15 and HP Omen 16.
AMD also shared details of its upcoming FidelityFX Super Resolution scaling framework, which will be released later this year. He is set to take over Nvidia DLSS (Deep Learning Supersampling) technology that allows GeForce GPUs to compensate for the performance achieved by beam tracking by displaying at a lower resolution and then increasing to the target resolution. AMD said that FidelityFX will be supported not only by Ryzen’s wide range of GPUs and APUs, but also by competition, most notably Nvidia’s GeForce series.
This broad compatibility and the fact that it is open source will tempt developers to support FidelityFX, according to AMD. Gamers will have four image quality options, so gamers will be able to choose their preferred balance between frame rate and quality. It is said that the performance is up to 2.5 times better than the visualization of the natural resolution in some titles. More details about the FidelityFX Super Resolution, including a list of supported games, will be announced on June 22.
Closing the main note, Su presented the upcoming possibilities for the production of AMD 3D chiplets in the form of a prototype processor based on the existing Ryzen 9 5900X processor, but with additional 3D vertical cache. A new 64MB 7nm chipset layer SRAM is stacked directly on each main complex, tripling its L3 cache capacity in the same fingerprint with almost no visible difference. The cache is bonded directly to the base layer using copper-to-copper connections without solder, resulting in greater density and efficiency than other similar approaches to silicon stacking in the industry, according to AMD.
In a demo game, the prototype 3D chipboard achieved a 15 percent higher frame rate than the standard Ryzen 9 5900X processor running at the same speed, which Su characterized as increasing the performance of the entire architectural generation. 3D V-Cache is only the first realization of 3D chiplets, and Su also announced that high-end products designed with 3D chiplets will go into production by the end of 2021.
