India’s Lakshiya Sen advanced to the men’s singles quarterfinals at the prestigious All England Open badminton tournament on Thursday. Sen defeated Frenchman Thomas Ruxelle 21-18, 21-17.
Sen will now face either Irishman Nat Nguyen, who beat Kidambi Shrikant on Wednesday, or Mark Callou of the Netherlands. His result was the highest point for the Indians so far in Day 2 of the Super 1000 tournament with HS Prannoy, knocked out in the men’s singles, and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa lost their mixed match.
Prannoy lost 15-21, 14-21 lost to Japanese world number 1 Kento Momota in 48 minutes. This is the eighth consecutive defeat of Pranho against Momota, who is returning to international badminton after more than a year after a crash in January last year led to the absence of the rest of the 2020 season.
Meanwhile, Rankiredi and Ponapa lost 21-19, 21-9 to Japan’s Yuki Kaneko and Misaki Matsumoto in 35 minutes.
Rankiredi will be in action later in the day when he teams up with Chirag Shetti in the men’s doubles against Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen of Denmark. The reigning world champion PV Sindhu later faced Christophersen in the women’s singles, while Sameer Verma faced third Danish winner Anders Antonsen.
