Alexander Zverev began running for a third title at the Munich Open, defeating Ricardas Berankis 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday in the second round.
The top-ranked Zverev, who won the tournament in 2017 and 2018, hit six aces, saved three of the five breakout points he faced, and scored five of his own against his 89th opponent.
Then the sixth-ranked German will face Ilya Ivashko or the American qualifier Mackenzie MacDonald in the quarterfinals. MacDonald upset sixth seed Dusan Lajovic on Tuesday.
Also second, Casper Ruud defeated Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-2, and John Millman advanced after opponent Guido Pella retired with an injury while trailing 6-4, 2-0.
