Starting with up to eight fresh faces, FC Goa was defeated 4-0 by Iranian champions Persepolis FC in their rematch of the AFC Champions League Group E match here on Friday.
Shahriyar Moganlu (24th minute), Mehadi Torabi (43rd), Isa Alkasir (47th) and Kamal Kamyabinia (58th) scored for the winners in a completely one-sided match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
The game of three games in the week before this game forced FC coach Juan Ferrando to make big changes in the starting XI, but this move hampered the team’s prospects, as it seemed meaningless in the face of the attacking force of the fantasy Iranian club.
Three of the four goals conceded by the home team came due to mistakes by his players, especially goalkeeper Navin Kumar, who was played to give air to Dheeraj Singh’s first choice after his excellent performance in the three previous outings.
Navin was to blame for the first two goals, while defender Mohamed Ali was to blame for the fourth.
FC Persepolis, runners-up in the latest edition of the elite club competition, dominated the possession and FC Goa could hardly hinder the opponent’s goalkeeper, reflecting their struggles in the fourth exit of their first season of the tournament.
Goa survived early, with Persepolis failing to get their deliveries ahead after scoring twice in the nets in the previous match against the same opponents – a penalty and a corner.
However, Moghanlou overcame a dead end when he unleashed his left foot past the unfortunate Naveen at the post.
Shortly before the half, Torabi made it 2-0 when he converted from a place after Navin, unable to take the ball from Ali Shojai’s cross from the left, knocked down Alcazir inside the penalty area.
Persepolis had a great start after the break, as Alkasir, after being released by MoghanlouIss, scored without much fuss.
Thanks to Ali’s reckless defense, Camiabinia inflicted more misery on Goa as he scored the visitors’ fourth goal of the match.
Ivan Gonzalez captain of FC Goa in the absence of the removed Edu Bedia.
After playing a 0-0 draw against Al Rayyan of Qatar and Al Wahda of the UAE, FC Goa lost to Persepolis 1-2 in the first match.
The result showed Persepolis, with 12 points from four games, extending its 100 percent victory record, while Goa suffered its second straight defeat after a 1-2 loss to Yahya Golmohammadi on Tuesday.
